Spring is finally on its way; the days are getting longer, and the sun is beginning to peep through the clouds we have become so used to over the winter months. In line with spring cleaning our homes now isalso the time to spring clean our oral hygiene routines.
The team at Teeth and Smiles have got some tips to keep your teeth looking their best.
Perfect your brushing technique
Brushing your teeth twice a day is not enough if it’s done ineffectively. It is important to use a small-headed brush, follow a routine to cover all areas, brush for at least 2 minutes with gentle circular motions, and angle the brush at 45 degrees to clean the gum line. This will ensure that you are getting the greatest benefit from your toothbrushing routine.
Spit, don’t rinse
After brushing, spit instead of rinsing to keep fluoride on your teeth longer. Fluoride benefits teeth by:
- rebuilding weakened enamel
- reversing early tooth decay
- inhibiting harmful oral bacteria
Bacteria break down sugar and carbohydrates, producing acids that lead to demineralization, which weakens enamel and causes cavities. Fluoride helps remineralize enamel, preventing cavities and reversing early decay.
Update your equipment
Replace your toothbrush or toothbrush head every three months or sooner if the bristles become worn or splayed, this will ensure that you are brushing effectively. Avoid brushing too hard to prevent tooth damage and abrasion.
Clean interdentally
Cleaning between teeth helps prevent gum disease and tooth decay. Various tools like tape, interdental brushes, floss picks, or an air flosser are available. Choose what suits you best but ensure you clean interdentally for optimal dental health.
Ensure that your diet is tooth friendly
Foods such as nuts, fruits (such as apples), cheese, chicken, and vegetables are all beneficial for dental health. It is also important to limit the intake of sugary foods, which should ideally be consumed only during meals to reduce the frequency of sugar exposure to teeth.
