With an ever-increasing array of toothbrushes available, the team at Teeth and Smiles look at the key factors to consider when choosing a new brush.
Provided you brush your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes, using proper brushing technique you should be able to reduce plaque build-up and keep your gums healthy with either a manual or a powered toothbrush. Whether you have a manual or an electric toothbrush there are certain characteristics that you should look for.
Size
Your toothbrush should allow you to easily access all surfaces of your teeth. A medium to small head is best for most people. Larger heads can be unwieldy and make it difficult to reach the sides and backs of your molars.
Bristle Variety
It is recommended that you use a soft bristled toothbrush. If you have a hard or medium bristled brush and use it too vigorously it is possible to cause toothbrush abrasion, damaging both your teeth and gums. A soft bristled brush may take some time to get used to but in the long run is a much better choice for your long-term oral health.
Comfort
A key factor to consider is whether you will use the toothbrush. There is no point in buying an all singing and dancing electric toothbrush if you find it easier to use your old trusty manual toothbrush. For people with limited mobility an electric toothbrush may be easier to use, or it is possible to get toothbrushes with adapted handles for people with limited dexterity. For children look for brushes with small handles for little hands and ensure that children are supervised when brushing their teeth up to the age of 10.
Effectiveness
There have been several studies conducted into the effectiveness of electric vs manual toothbrushes and overall, there has been no significant difference found between their effectiveness.
Cost
Electric toothbrushes do cost more than their manual counter parts. You will also need to replace the electric toothbrush head as often as you change your manual toothbrush. However, if using an electric toothbrush helps you to keep your teeth cleaner, you may make up for the expense with a reduction in dental bills!
Changing your toothbrush
It is recommended that you change your toothbrush every three months or more often if the toothbrush head is showing signs of wear. A good way to remember to change your toothbrush is to change them on the first day of every season – to every toothbrush there is a season.
