6 Smile-Saving Steps for Happy Little Teeth

Tiny teeth may be small, but they have a big job to do! From first smiles to first bites, your child’s teeth deserve a little everyday care from the moment that first tooth pops through.right brushing buddy

The good news? Building brilliant brushing habits does not have to feel like a chore. The team atTeeth & Smiles have put together these simple, parent-friendly tips to help keep your child’s smile healthy, sparkling and ready for every photo opportunity.

  1. Choose the right brushing buddy. Use a soft, small-headed toothbrush and a fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride is a little tooth superhero: it helps protect against decay by making teeth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugars, and it can even help repair the very early signs of decay. Try brushing in the same order each time so every tooth gets its turn.
  2. Make twice-a-day brushing non-negotiable. Brush before bed and at least once more during the day. Bedtime brushing is especially important because it clears away bacteria before saliva production slows down overnight. After food or drink, wait at least 30 minutes before brushing, as enamel can be softer straight after eating and brushing too soon may wear it away.
  3. Spit, do not rinse. Once brushing is done, encourage your child to spit out the extra toothpaste but avoidbrushing rinsing with water. This gives the fluoride more time to work its magic. Children usually need help with brushing until they are around 7 years old, or until you are confident, they can do a thorough job on their own.
  4. Turn brushing into playtime. If brushing feels like a battle, bring in the fun! Let your child choose their toothbrush, play a favourite two-minute song, use an egg timer, or create a reward chart. A star for every successful brush can make the routine feel like a mini celebration.
  5. Be the brushing role model. Children love to copy what grown-ups do, so let them see you brushing your teeth too. You could even make it a family brushing moment: they help you, then you help them. Smiles all round!
  6. Visit the dentist early. Book your child in to see the dentist as soon as their first tooth appears. Early visits helpVisit the dentist your child get used to the dental practice, build confidence and understand that routine appointments are a normal part of looking after their smile.
